Milk thistle is a biennial herbaceous plant that can grow up to 1 metre high. Native to the Mediterranean basin, it thrives in dry, sunny, uncultivated soils and does not grow above 700 metres in altitude. The fruits are harvested after 2 years so that they contain sufficient levels of active compounds.
